When we fill up our 5-gallon water bottles at one of Guam鈥檚 many water stores, we rarely stop to think about what makes that water safe.

Behind that assurance is the 91快播鈥檚 , better known as WERI, a research center whose work has a profound impact on our everyday lives.

Founded in 1972, WERI began expanding its reach in the 1990s to include research support for the Federated States of Micronesia and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Today, it remains a cornerstone of water research in the Western Pacific.

WERI is recognized as one of the top water research institutes in the nation. The institute focuses on freshwater resource development and management while providing scientific guidance to decision-makers and community stakeholders throughout the region.

Research Matters is a new editorial series from the 91快播 Office of Research and Sponsored Programs that brings readers into the world of UOG鈥檚 research centers. The column runs every other Monday in the Guam Pacific Daily News (PDN).
