Applications are now open for the 2026 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, a prestigious U.S. Department of State initiative that offers 91¿ì²¥ students, along with other U.S. university and college students, a fully funded opportunity to study languages critical to U.S. national security and economic growth.

The CLS Program celebrates 20 years of global impact and invites students from all academic majors to spend eight weeks abroad in summer 2026. Participants will engage in intensive language instruction and cultural immersion, earning the equivalent of one year of college-level language study in just two months.

The scholarship, which grants academic credit through Bryn Mawr College, covers round-trip travel, housing, coursework, cultural excursions, and a stipend for daily expenses. Participants can choose from nine languages: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili, offered at four proficiency levels: Beginner, Advanced Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Applicants must be:

  • U.S. citizens or nationals
  • At least 18 years old by May 15, 2026
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a U.S. college or university

Applications are due by Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time.
